Anoka County is part of the 7-county metro area
that makes up the whole of the Twin Cities Metro area. It is the
northernmost county with its county seat sharing the same name,
Anoka, the self-proclaimed "Halloween Capital of the World". They
hosted the first documented Halloween parade there in 1920, when the
holiday itself was still rather controversial, but didn't officially
gain the title until 1937. The area was first settled by immigrants
in 1844. By the 1850's, a real town had developed with its own
store, school and flour mill..
The county itself covers 446 square miles of land, 23 of which are
covered by lakes and rivers, the equivalent of 5.08%. The
Mississippi River, Rum River, Rice Creek and Lake George are all
among these.
Anoka County is also home to over a dozen County and Regional
parks including Bunker Hills Regional Park, Coon Lake County Park,
Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park, Kordiak County Park, Lake George
Regional Park, Locke County Park, Manomin County Park,
Martin-Island-Linwood Lakes Regional Park, Mississippi West Regional
Park, Rice Creek Chain of Lakes Regional Park Reserve, Riverfront
Regional Park/Islands of Peace, Rum River Central Regional Park, Rum
River North County Park and Rum River South County Park. And all of
these parks, with the exception of Mississippi West, have miles of
bike trails to explore (paved, natural surface, or limestone
aggregate). Bunker Park also features horse stables so that you can
go and rent horses to explore the trails. There are also riding
trails in the Rum River Central Regional Park for your enjoyment,
but no stables...
