The city of Anoka is the county seat for Anoka County and self-proclaimed “Halloween Capital of the World”, holding its first ever Halloween parade in 1920, a tradition that’s been followed to this day. In the 2010 census, the city had 17,142 residents and is located on the north western part of the Twin Cities metro area, straddling the Rum River and the Mississippi as it contains their convergence. The main access to this community is U.S. Highway 10 running southeast-northwest, U.S. Highway 169 running north-south and Minnesota State Highway 47 also running north-south. Immigrants originally discovered the area in the mid 1840s, and by 1880 had well over 2,700 permanent residents, and finally incorporated in 1878.

And the city itself is very family oriented. No Anoka home is far from a park or activity. All Anoka homes are located within its 7.2 square miles of territory. Anoka houses also share one zip code, 55305 and one area code, 763. It also shares city borders with the communities of Coon Rapids, Champlin, Ramsey, Andover and Dayton. Anoka is also home to Anoka Technical College, featuring educations in horticulture, health, general education, construction and manufacturing, automotive, information technology and business and reporting high job placement rates for their students.

To enjoy some of Anoka’s entertainment, start with their Aquatic Center on 7th Avenue. It features a 200 foot water slide, a one and three meter diving board, a huge shallow play area, a small person slide (for youth under 42”), spray fountains, a concession stand, sand volleyball court, huge shade umbrellas and over 250 chairs to use. Neighboring George Green Park also has a picnic area and playground you can use. George Green also has an indoor pavilion, 2 horseshoe courts, a walking trail, grills, basketball hoop and 5 tennis courts. Akin River Park is also a popular destination with Anoka residents with playground equipment, picnic shelter with restrooms, tables, benches and grills to use as well as river access and a boat launch. And if you like fishing, City Hall Dam and Port-of-Anoka will suit you just fine. There is a picnic area and scenic overlook, walking trail, fishing, handicap accessible boating access to downtown, and canoe access. George Enloe Park, on the other hand is a 23-acre multipurpose park with a youth activity complex that, in the winter, doubles as a warming house with indoor restrooms. The park also has 2 playground structures, softball fields, regulation baseball field, soccer field, sand volleyball court, full size basketball court, walking trails, tennis courts, picnic area with grills and abundant parking. In the winter there’s a hockey rink, skating area and sledding hill.

The city also hosts Castle Field, John Ward Park, Peninsula Point Two Rivers Historical Park, Rick Sorenson Park, Rudy Johnson Park, Sunny Acres Park, Mississippi River Community Park, Aaron Greenwald Park, Bob Ehlen Park, Brisbin Park, Eastman Amphitheatre, Elm Street Park, Highland Park, John Ward Park, King Park, Memorial Park and river and trail corridors to explore such as Stout Pond Trail, Rum River/Henry Hammer Trail, Rum River Nature area, Community Gardens, Rice Street Beach, and Brom Canoe rest. Anoka is also home to West Moore Lake and East Moore Lake for fishing or boating.
