No matter what your pleasure, Eagan’s sure to please. For fishing or water sports, some of Eagan’s larger lakes are best such as Thomas Lake, Holland Lake, Blackhawk Lake, Schwanz Lake, North Lake, O’Brian Lake, Carlson Lake, Fish Lake, Cliff Lake, Jensen Lake, Schulze Lake, O’Leary Lake, LeMay Lake, Gravel Pit Lake, Hay Lake, Holz Lake, McCarthy Lake or McDonough Lake. Many of these also allow ice fishing in the winter and are stocked with a variety of fish.
The city itself is located in Dakota County and lies on the south bank of the Minnesota River and, from the 2010 census, has a population 64,206 residents. In the 1980?s, as some of the major highways running through and near the city of Eagan were being completed or expanded brought some of the greatest growth to the city. The addition of the Mendota bridge in particular allowed thousands of Delta Airline employees (Northwest at the time) to have quick and easy transport to work just over the river without driving west to the Cedar Bridge just to have to drive back east again to the airport.
Eagan was named after Patrick Eagan, an emigrant from Ireland that tamed the over 200 acres where the then town hall would stand and was the first chairman of the town board of supervisors. Eagan later became known as an Irish farming community and afterward “The Onion Capital of the World”, though you’d never know it driving through the Eagan of today.
