Historic Hastings is divided into both Dakota and Washington Counties and is located right across the river valley from Prescott, Wisconsin at the point where the St. Croix River meets the Mighty Mississippi. It was named for the first governor of the state, Henry Hastings Sibley. The city itself is 11 square miles and boasts a population of 11,172 residents as of the 2010 census. It is accessible via U.S. Highway 61 which cuts through the east side of the city running north-south, State Highway 55 running east-west through the middle of town and the most common access to the Twin Cities metro, Highway 316 in southern Hastings, and short Highway 291: host to the Minnesota Veterans Home.
July features the Rivertown Days Festival in Hastings with food, games, carnival, beer garden, contests, medallion hunts, stunt shows and a variety of music and music contests drawing thousands of locals and visitors alike.
If you, like most of Minnesotans having been pent up all winter, love the out of doors, you’ll love the parks and recreation available in Hastings. Start out in Afton State Park hiking or biking along miles of scenic trails or stop at a secluded swimming beach or camp out at any number of hike-in sites. Then try out your outdoor skills at Spring Lake Park Reserve where you can follow an archery trail or visit Schaar’s Bluff Picnic Area for some stunning views. Then, just off Highway 61, visit the beautiful Vermillion Falls and limestone ravine where there is a picnic shelter, grills and abundant trails for hiking and biking. And also, being located on the Mississippi and St. Croix Rivers, public dockage is available for boaters, canoes, fishing and water skiing. Area boat rental is also available.
