Crystal is a relatively small city at 5.9 square miles in area located just minutes northwest of Minneapolis with only 1/10 if a square mile of water – unusual for any city here in the “Land of 10,000 Lakes”. It is also a long and narrow city containing a portion of highway 81 and parts of it bordering highway 100.
It is neighbored by the cities of New Hope, Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center, Robbinsdale and Golden Valley. Crystal also contains a small general aviation field within its boundaries known simply as Crystal Airport.
Crystal’s population is estimated over 22,000 residents, and has earned the designation “Minnesota Star City” because of its noteworthy economic development. Former University of Minnesota All-American Defensemen Todd Richards and Travis Richards both played pro hockey and attended Armstrong High School there and Wrestling announcer Mick Karch is also originally from the city of Crystal, MN.
Crystal also has its own Municipal Pool, complete with “Jet Scream” Water Slide added in 1990, the same year the Crystal Community Center opened its doors. Now home to over 240 acres of parkland, Crystal now has 28 established parks and recreation areas and an annual budget of $1.15 million for its maintenance and that of the municipal pool and community areas.
