Golden Valley is an average sized first ring suburb of Minneapolis on its west border. Golden Valley is also neighbored by Robbinsdale, Crystal and New Hope on its northern edge, Plymouth and Minnetonka on its west side, and St. Louis Park along its southern border. Thoroughfares include Highways 100 and 55 dissecting it north/south and east/west respectively and the city can also be accessed by 394 on its southern boundary and/or Highway 169 on its western perimeter.

Golden Valley is home to over 20,000 residents and over 30,000 employees with such notable employers as Honeywell International, Tenant, Bluestone Garden, UnitedHealth Group, USFamily.net and General Mills, whose corporate headquarters are located here. Residents of the city generally send their children to either the Robbinsdale or Hopkins School District, unless they are enrolled in Golden Valleys well known private school, Breck School, relocated to Golden Valley in 1981.

The city of Golden Valley has also been made geographically distinct by the fact that the 45th parallel north runs directly through it, roughly corresponding with Duluth Street. This particular latitude is often known as the half way mark between the equator and the North Pole, although the true half way mark is about 10 miles north of the 45th parallel. Golden Valley is also home to Minneapolis-based Skatepark 3rd Lair, the Golden Valley Little League and the Phoenix Soccer Club.
