Minnetonka Minnesota is a suburb of
Minneapolis on the West side. It is a second ring community, meaning
it itself does not touch Minneapolis, it touches other cities that
touch Minneapolis. It's name was derived from a Dakota Indian word
meaning "great water". It is considered to be a somewhat wealthy
community without the "snobbish" reputation of Edina, its neighbor
to the Southeast.
The city is primarily residential, but as 14th largest city in
Minnesota, also contains such well known retail areas as Ridgedale
Center. Its original industry started along the Minnehaha Creek, a
prosperous sawmill, was centrally located in the, what was
originally 36 mi.² of Minnetonka.
However, between the years of 1883 and 1956 the
township shrunk as Wayzata, St. Louis Park, Hopkins, and other small
townships incorporated or annexed portions of Minnetonka. Minnetonka
Mills (along with its post office), served as the trading and
business center as well as port to Lake Minnetonka until the 1870s.
Today Minnetonka is still a thriving community sought after
for its valuable real estate known to contain, or be adjacent to
lakes and streams, rich vegetation, protected wetlands, 44
neighborhood parks and trails, and an abundance of wildlife.
