Mound is a unique city in Hennepin County. It has a large variety of residences and much of it is contained within, and surrounded by the Lake Minnetonka bodies of water.
The city itself is only 4.9 square miles, one of the smallest in Hennepin County, but also 2 square miles of that is water, which is just over 40%! This is primarily made up of Lake Langdon, Saunders Lake, Dutch Lake and Black Lake. All of these are widely considered to be part of Lake Minnetonka.
The city itself is home to around 10,000 residents on it’s merely 2.9 square miles of land. It is also a particularly diverse city, offering homes from the 100’s or less, on up to the multi-million dollar lake shore homes. Mound is also the birthplace and home of Tonka Trucks, named for its neighbor & primary body of water Lake Minnetonka and the city of Minnetonka.
The “Tonka Toys” headquarters were also originally located in Mound, but as they grew were forced to relocate to an area that was more conducive to shipping and receiving. Being that Mound is almost one half water, navigation was an obstacle. Mound is also birthplace to actor Kevin Sorbo, famous primarily in the late 90’s for TV show “Hercules”.
Interestingly Mound was originally named for its old Indian burial mounds once contained within the city limits, but not from the Dakota Indians who occupied the area when Europeans were exploring. The mounds were actually from the prehistoric Indians who once occupied the area. The city itself is now surrounded by Spring Park, Orono, St. Bonifacious, and Minnetrista.
