Hopkins is one of the smallest cities in the seven-county metro area that makes up the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul at just 4.1 square miles, all of which is land, with no significant bodies of water. Home to over 17,000 in population, it is rather densely populated and over 98% developed with almost no land left available.

Also, for its size it has a reputation of being home to an abundance of college age adults. One of its most popular attractions for this generation is its downtown "strip". Main Street in Hopkins, running east west through the middle of town is home to all kinds of shops, restaurants, and other entertainment. In the warm months it is full of people and cars there to enjoy the many foods and wares, but also just to people-watch all the others there. It is also occasionally known as the place to show off your vintage wheels by "cruising the strip".

Hopkins petitioned itself from being part of its larger neighbor, Minneapolis in 1893, then forming the separate village of West Minneapolis originally about 3 square miles, but increased it’s size by annexing another square mile. Now surrounded by the cities of Minnetonka, Edina, and Saint Louis Park, it’s main highway access is highway 169 running north south near its eastern border. It can also be reached quite easily by using dissecting east west running highway 7 which, if followed to the east northeast, leads directly to the Uptown area of Minneapolis and its abundant lakes.

Hopkins, despite its small geographic size, has been noted not once, but twice in the Guinness Book of World Records: once for the worlds tallest water tower, and once for most local Bars per capita.
