New Hope is a small city geographically at only 5.2 square miles, but holds a relatively high density of residences, over 20,000, and therefore sports more of an urban environment despite its second ring suburban location. It?s located in the center of Hennepin County and its neighbors include Crystal, Brooklyn Park, Plymouth and Golden Valley and it also touches its northwest corner to the city of Maple Grove. New Hope is most easily accessible by north/south running highway 169 which marks New Hopes westernmost border.

Just minutes from downtown Minneapolis and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, New Hope contains very little water as the ?Land of 10,000 Lakes? is known for, less than ? of 1%. Originally New Hope was a farming community, part of the Crystal Lake Township, but in 1936 the city of Crystal, Minnesota was incorporated including all of what was previously know as Crystal Lake Township. The farmers located on the western half decided to break off and form their own township, the New Hope Township. In 1953 as population density increased drastically and farmers were forced farther out of the city, it re-incorporated itself as a borough (an administrative division designating itself a self-governing township).

New Hope, despite its dense population, also contains over 200 acres of park land spread over 20 different parks, a nine-hole public golf course, Olympic-sized swimming pool, ice arena and an outdoor theatre. This is offset by its 3 prominent industrial parks providing a balance between residential, commercial and industrial land use in the city as well as abundant parks and recreation.
