In the city of St. Paul you will find a well preserved culture of community bonding and preserved historical sites and data. Downtown the Capital building sits on capital hill directly across from the also well known St. Paul Cathedral. In 1841, when the St. Paul Catholic Church was established, Father Galtier's named it after his favorite saint which of course, later influenced the name of the capital city.
It is surrounded by Anoka county on its north side, Washington County to the east, Dakota County to the south and Hennepin County on the west side. Coincidentally, even though Ramsey is the smallest county in area, it's sister to the south, Hennepin is by far the most populous County in the state with almost double Ramsey's population.
In terms of area, Ramsey is actually the smallest of all Minnesota counties. It is a mere 170 square miles, 8.44% of which is water, meaning 14 square miles are lakes and rivers. And in Ramsey County most often there is reserved park land around their great lakes, including, but not limited to the following: Beaver Lake, Lake Gervais, Island Lake, Lake Josephine, Lake McCarrons, Lake Owasso, Poplar Lake (as of yet, undeveloped), Turtle Lake and White Bear Lake.
Ramsey County is also responsible for 5 regional trail corridors and 6 regional parks covering over 3,774 acres again including, but not limited to the following: Bald Eagle-Otter Lakes, Battle Creek, Keller Lake, Long Lake, Tony Schmidt, Vadnais-Snail Lakes and Vadnais- Sucker Lakes Picnic Area.
