Sherburne County is the northwestern most of the 11-county Twin Cities metro region. Its county seat is Elk River, but its most populous city is St. Cloud with around 60,000 residents (per the 2000 census). Although the bulk of St. Cloud is not actually inside Sherburne County, it in fact straddles Sherburne and 2 other counties. Sherburne itself contains at least 65,000 based on the 2000 census, but some estimates of 90,000 and higher are projected due to its enormous development in the last 10 years.

Founded in February of 1856, Sherburne County contains 451 square miles of area, 15 of those are bodies of water while 436 are actual land. Much of Sherburne County is best accessed by Interstate 94 exiting north. Inside Sherburne also lie U.S. Highways 10 and 169, and Minnesota State Highways 24, 25, 101, and 301. Also due to its recent population growth, you will find a lot of newer construction homes and buildings in Sherburne.

This county also contains 10 fairly large recreational lakes and many smaller ones including: Beaudry Lake, Big Lake, Big Mud Lake, Birch Lake, Blacks Lake, Boyd Lake, Briggs Lake, Bucks Lake, Camp Lake, Cantlin Lake, Carter Lake, Clear Lake, Clitty Lake, Crescent Lake, Diann Lake, Duffy Lake, Eagle Lake, East Hunter Lake, Eilers Lake, Elk Lake, Frederickson Slough, Helene Lake, Hidden Lake, Jones Lake, Julie Lake, Kerber Lake, Lake Ann, Lake Fremont, Lake Josephine, Lake Margritte, Lake Mitchell, Landis Lake, Little Diann Lake, Long Lake, Long Pond, McDowall Lake, Mosford Lake, Pickerel Lake, Prairie Hill Lake, Prairie Lake, Rice Lake, Rush Lake, Sandy Lake, Stickney Lake, Stone Lake, Strand Lake, Thompson Lake, West Hunter Lake and Wood Lake.

Sherburne is surrounded by Anoka County to its southeast, Wright County to its southwest, Stearns on its west side, Benton to the northwest, Mille Lacs County on its northern border, and Isanti on its northeastern side.
