Washington County, established in 1849, is one of the Twin Cities 7-county metro region. Located in the southeast portion of the state, Washington County is the easternmost of the 7 counties that make up the metro. And, on the far east border lies its county seat, Stillwater.

The county covers an area of 423 square miles, 31 of which are water – the equivalent of 7.43%. Stillwater, Washington’s county seat and often referred to as the ‘birthplace of Minnesota’, sits on the border of Wisconsin, directly across the St. Croix river from Hudson, Wisconsin and it’s neighboring St. Croix County. It was the designated location of the very first Minnesota Territory prison, although its primary industry at the time was it’s sawmills built to handle all the lumber shipped down the St. Croix River from the loggers in the north. It is today, well known for its historic sites, cave tours and elegant shops and restaurants.

Washington County itself is also surrounded by both Minnesota and Wisconsin counties, and originally organized as part of the Wisconsin Territories. Surrounding counties include: Chisago County to the north, Anoka County to the northwest, Ramsey County due west, Dakota County to the southwest, Pierce County, Wisconsin to the southeast and St. Croix County, Wisconsin due east. There are several theories as to the selection of the name of the county, but most commonly it is thought to be named after our first president, George Washington, who was very well respected in the area.

This county is also home to the well known Lake Elmo Park Reserve and St. Croix Bluffs Regional Park, providing breathtaking view of the St. Croix River Valley. Washington is also home to Big Marine Park Reserve, Cottage Grove Ravine Regional Park, Hardwood Creek Regional Trail, Historic Courthouse, Pine Point Regional Park, Point Douglas Park and Square Lake Regional Park.
