If you’ve ever been to Stillwater or even just through Stillwater, MN, you’re fully aware of this town’s variety, charm and history. The first thing noticeable is the main street that parallels the St. Croix river bank, along which all the great shops, bistros, tourist attractions and adventures lie. If you’re a boater, you’re already aware of the docks available to stop and shop or dine at one of the picturesque riverside restaurants such as the historic Freight House, Brine’s Restaurant & Bar, or the casual Dock CafĂ©. Or perhaps you’re looking for a little entertainment, then you’ll appreciate their 4th of July fireworks over the river, or the Fall Colors Fine Art & Jazz Festival, Summer Tuesdays, the Rivertown Art Festival or Lumberjack Days in July. If you enjoy antiquing, you’ll need to go no further than up and down the main street and in and out of buildings to find what you’re looking for. And don’t forget to explore Stillwater’s caves, trolleys, hot air balloon rides, boat tours, historical tours, vineyards, golf courses and parks. And it would be remiss not to mention the authentic old school German cuisine artfully prepared and served since 1966 at the Award Winning Gasthaus Bavarian Hunter featuring some great imported German beers, wines and liquors.

Now, if you’re doing more than just passing through Stillwater, you’ll be interested to know a little more than just its tourist draw and entertainment value. This Washington County city is also actually the County Seat and has a total area of 7.3 square miles. One of Minnesota’s oldest towns, Stillwater lies directly across the St. Croix River from Wisconsin and got its start from the then-abundant river traffic including lumber transport. The first schoolhouse in Minnesota was located in Stillwater, established in 1848, before Minnesota was even declared a state and was also the site of the territories first prison. And to this day they are one of the best school districts in the state maintaining high academic standards as well as sports and other extracurricular activities. In recent years, Stillwater has been focused on adding medium density housing to their repertoire and has had much development on the outskirts of the town as well as the north end of the downtown area.

There is also a growing population of people who live in Stillwater for all the reasons above, and love the area, river and variety of culture available, who work in the Twin Cities metro area. It’s a great way to have your cake and eat it too. Especially since housing costs in Stillwater is significantly less expensive than the metro area, it becomes affordable to spend a little more time in commute and a little more gas money, and you can literally reach downtown St. Paul in as little as 30 minutes.

Whatever your motivating factor, Stillwater is a part of Minnesota not to be missed and is an integral part of the state’s history and development, and continues to be.
