Brooklyn Center is a relatively small city of Hennepin County of only 8.5 square miles, .4 of which is water including North Twin Lake and Palmer Lake, popular as destinations or residences. It was established as a village in 1911 after fear it would be annexed by the rapidly growing city of Minneapolis on its southeastern border.
As such it is now a first ring suburb also bordered by the cities of Robbinsdale, Crystal, Brooklyn Park and Fridley and following the banks of the Mississippi River. It is now completely urban and fairly densely populated with over 29,000 residents inside its borders.
